Rome, 10 June (LaPresse) – The government has taken action to tackle the “odious phenomenon of ‘open-and-close’ businesses”, namely those businesses very often run by non-EU nationals who evade tax by opening and closing within a short period, failing to pay taxes, and then closing and reopening under a different name. So far, we have closed 24,000 of them by administrative order, a significant achievement for the state, but certainly more important for the honest business owners of this country who pay their taxes and do not deserve to suffer unfair competition from those who, perhaps after entering Italy illegally, go on to compete unfairly with us. We cannot allow this because the message we want to send to everyone is that this is not the banana republic. Here, the rules are respected.” So said the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, speaking at the Confcommercio Assembly currently taking place at the Auditorium della Conciliazione in Rome.
