Milan, 16 June (LaPresse) – Vincenzo De Luca, Mayor of Salerno, has set up a special unit within the local police force, the NOS (Security Operations Unit), which will report directly to him, the mayor. The NOS was established by a City Council resolution, passed unanimously – with councillors Gaetana Falcone and Pasqualina Memoli absent – and will consist of twenty local police officers. The NOS’s task will be to tackle petty crime, including predatory offences, illegal street trading, urban decay and environmental offences, occupation of public land and disturbance of the peace. The NOS officers will also be responsible for “continuous surveillance and the provision of observation, monitoring and enforcement services”, particularly in the area of the Lungomare Trieste promenade. The commander of the local police force will be responsible for selecting the 20 officers to be assigned to the NOS, subject to the mayor’s approval.
