Rome, 17 June (LaPresse) – In a statement released overnight, the G7 leaders “welcome” the announcement “of an agreement between the United States and Iran, secured through President Trump’s strong leadership, with the support of the mediating countries, which offers a historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapons and to address the threats posed by its regional and ballistic activities. We support this agreement and stand ready to contribute to its implementation.” The ‘Big Seven’ also reaffirmed that – with regard to the Strait of Hormuz – “the right of unrestricted transit without tolls is the cornerstone of international trade”. We agree that the multinational, independent and defensive initiative led by France and the United Kingdom can play an important role in facilitating the resumption of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, protecting merchant ships, reassuring commercial transport operators and supporting the verification of the removal of all mines.” The G7 countries also “firmly” support a “robust and comprehensive” diplomatic agreement, building on the Memorandum of Understanding secured by President Trump, which can bring peace and security for all in the region. “We emphasise the need for negotiations to this end to address the threats posed by Iran in the region and beyond, and to ensure that it never acquires a nuclear weapon. We agree that such negotiations would benefit from the contributions of relevant regional and international partners, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). We reiterate that Iran will never acquire a nuclear weapon,” they conclude.
