Rome, 17 June (LaPresse) – The Attorney General’s Office has requested that the sentences handed down on appeal in the trial for the murder of Saman Abbas, the young Pakistani woman killed in Novellara in the spring of 2021, be upheld. A hearing is being held today before the Court of Cassation to examine the appeals lodged by all the defendants. The Court of Assizes of Appeal upheld the life sentences already handed down at first instance to the girl’s parents, Shabbar Abbas and Nazia Shaheen. In the same appeal proceedings, the cousins Ikram Ijaz and Nomanhulaq Nomanhulaq were also sentenced to life imprisonment, whilst the uncle, Danish Hasnain, was sentenced to 22 years’ imprisonment. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested that the sentences be upheld in full. Also present at the hearing are the former mayor of Novellara, in the province of Reggio Emilia – now a regional councillor for the Democratic Party – Elena Carletti, and the current mayor, Simone Zarantonello.
