Beirut (Lebanon), 19 June (LaPresse) – At least 16 people have been killed in Israeli air strikes carried out overnight in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese state news agency NNA. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) stated that they had struck several targets in southern Lebanon overnight, whilst Hezbollah reported intense clashes in the area. The attacks took place as talks scheduled to take place in Switzerland between Iran and the United States, aimed at bringing the war in Iran to a definitive end, were postponed. The Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon and its ongoing attacks in Lebanon against Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militia, had been a key issue in the talks. According to reports by the Al-Mayadeen channel prior to the news of the talks’ postponement, Iran was delaying the dispatch of its delegation to Switzerland due to the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Lebanon. Israel maintains that it must continue to maintain control of southern Lebanon and that it has a free hand to fight Hezbollah, as the Lebanese group launches attacks in northern Israel.
