Madrid (Spain), 19 June (LaPresse) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez could bring forward the general election, due to be held in July 2027, by a few months. Yesterday, upon arriving at the European Council, the Socialist leader stated that if he fails to get the budget bill passed this year, he will ‘take decisions’. These comments came after the Basque Nationalist Party and Coalición Canaria called for an early election should the government fail to secure approval for the budget. Sources at Moncloa clarified to the broadcaster LaSexta that, should the Prime Minister call an election before July next year, it would only be brought forward by a few months. The election, therefore, according to the same sources, would in any case be held in 2027. When choosing the election date, Sánchez will have to take into account the local and regional elections scheduled for May 2027. In recent days, the Prime Minister has ruled out a ‘super-Sunday election’ – that is, holding the general election on the same day as the local elections – but the question remains as to which election will take place first. The Basque nationalists, reports the newspaper El Español, would like the general election to be held before the local elections so that they can contest the local elections free from the ‘burden’ of continuing to provide external support to a now-weak government.
