Milan, 19 June (LaPresse) – Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna S.p.A. has announced that it “has appointed Alex Mumbrú as head coach of the first team”. Born in Barcelona on 12 June 1979, coach Mumbrú enjoyed a long and successful playing career with clubs including Joventut Badalona, Real Madrid and Bilbao Berri, with whom he won: 1 Spanish Championship, 2 Catalan Leagues, 1 ULEB Cup and 1 EuroCup. Wearing the Spanish national team jersey – alongside players such as Pau Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro, Rudy Fernández and Jorge Garbajosa, amongst others – he won: a silver medal at the Olympics; a gold medal at the World Championships; a gold and a silver medal at the European Championships; and a gold and a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games. Mumbrú’s coaching career began at Bilbao Berri, the club where he had spent his last nine seasons as a professional and where he immediately took up the role of head coach following his retirement. After four years, he moved on to his second club role at Valencia Basket Club. His big breakthrough, however, came as head coach of the German national team, a role that saw him lead the side to a historic gold medal at the 2025 European Championships in Latvia.
