Milan, 20 June (LaPresse) – Italy, under head coach Julio Velasco, have suffered their second defeat in the Volleyball Nations League. Following victories over the Czech Republic and Serbia, the Italian women’s team were forced to concede defeat to the strong US national side in their match on the fourth day of Pool 5 of the VNL, currently taking place in Pasig City, in the Philippines. At the end of a match in which Italy nevertheless gave their all and put up a fight against a team at full strength (with the exception of the absent Poulter), it was the USA who triumphed, taking their tally to 6 wins (and 1 defeat) in the overall standings and overtaking Italy, who remain on 5 wins (and 2 defeats). The final score (25–27; 20–25;) partly reflects a match in which the Italian women’s team nevertheless showed glimpses of a path now laid out before them – one that will require hard work and patience. Tomorrow at the PhilSport Arena in Pasig City, Week 2 concludes with a match against the as-yet-unbeaten Japan. Another high-level challenge, another opportunity for growth for this Italian side, which is determined to keep chasing qualification for the Finals in Macau.
