Rome, Jun. 20 (LaPresse) – “The president has spoken, the message he posted on social media is now the official line of the United States administration. We are no longer at the level of a conversation with a journalist that can be misunderstood or not. This is the official line and at the moment it documents a clear rupture.” This was stated to La Repubblica by Paolo Zampolli, U.S. government special envoy for Global Partnerships and personal friend of Donald Trump. According to Zampolli, the reason that led to the rupture is “very clear.” “The president expected Italy’s support during operations in Iran, but did not receive it,” he explained. “He has done a lot for the country and had given clear political backing to Prime Minister Meloni on various issues, without then receiving support on a matter of great importance.” Zampolli added that until “yesterday” he believed “the issue could be resolved with some gestures, for example if Foreign Minister Tajani had come to Miami for the planned economic forum and had a conversation with Secretary of State Rubio.” Or “one could also have invited the prime minister to the golf course with the president, to facilitate a more informal clarification. Now the situation has changed.” Finally, Zampolli gives a “suggestion” to the Prime Minister, namely to “look at other leaders with whom relations have not broken down, such as the Romanian president with whom I have personally worked, in order to understand how to proceed to get out of this difficult situation.”
