Palermo, 21 Jan. (LaPresse) – A 41-year-old woman, Nicoletta Rusu, died this morning after being hit by a car on the road leading to Pioppo, a hamlet of Monreale, in the province of Palermo. The victim was cycling with her husband and other friends when the group of cyclists was struck by a Fiat 500x which, whilst overtaking, veered into the oncoming lane and hit the cyclists head-on. The woman died instantly from her injuries; her husband was admitted to hospital in a state of shock, whilst a third cyclist is in hospital with several fractures but is not in a life-threatening condition. The driver of the car, Giuseppe Lucia, was subjected to a breathalyser test and tests to detect drugs in his blood by Municipal Police officers who attended the scene. The Palermo Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation. Magistrates are currently assessing whether to charge him with vehicular homicide.
