Rome, 22 June (LaPresse) – “It would be incredible if, following President Gravina’s resignation, the same Federal Council were to be reconstituted without any discussion of the issues at hand, because the problem is not the quality of the individual.” So said Giancarlo Abete, candidate for the presidency of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), upon arriving at the Hotel Astoria for the FIGC’s elective assembly. “Obviously, Giovanni Malagò is a person of great calibre. The problem is simply to resolve issues that have not yet been resolved. Fortunately, within the federation, the president does not have the power that Trump has, and so there is the whole dimension linked to the value of the presence and the substance of the members. We have a right of veto; we have a right to reach agreement. The members of the Federal Council therefore play a central role, and as such, this role must be exercised,” added the head of the LND. “Whenever we are knocked out of the World Cup, carrying on in the same way without taking responsibility is not good for the world of football; this is the rationale behind my candidacy,” he emphasised. “The General Assembly is always a fresh start, and so it is important to sow the seeds that will enable us to have a dialogue that is undoubtedly always constructive with all the constituent bodies, but also to allow for moments of debate,” concluded Abete.
