With nothing at stake on the pitch – Montella’s side had already been eliminated, whilst the Stars and Stripes were already assured of top spot in the group – the spectacle took centre stage. Trusty put Pochettino’s side ahead in the 3rd minute, Güler equalised immediately in the 10th minute, and Turkey took the lead on the half-hour mark through Yilmaz. Early in the second half, Berhalter scored to make it 2–2, but in stoppage time Yilmaz netted his second goal of the match, making Turkey’s World Cup campaign a little less bitter. In the round of 16, the USA will face Bosnia.
