Guadalajara (Mexico), June 27 (LaPresse/AP) – “What do I leave to Uruguayan football? Nothing, because any contribution a coach can make to a country’s football after three years of work does not materialise if results are not achieved. The fourth place in the World Cup qualifiers did not matter much, nor did third place in the Copa América.” This was the dejected statement of Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa after the elimination of Uruguay national football team from the World Cup. Uruguay were beaten 1–0 by Spain in their final match and exit the tournament after collecting just two points in three games, drawn from matches against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. “I believe we deserved to collect seven points from the three matches, but we leave with only two,” he added. “My tenure is one that leaves no trace.” Bielsa’s contract is set to expire at the end of the World Cup. Uruguay, ranked 19th in the FIFA World Ranking, are currently the highest-ranked team to be eliminated from the tournament. Spain is represented by the Spain national football team. The Copa América was also mentioned by Bielsa in his comments.
