Rome, 1 July (LaPresse) – Elected provinces are returning to Friuli Venezia Giulia, having been abolished in 2016. Following the amendment of the Statute by Constitutional Law 1/2026, the Regional Council has approved Bill 86, which reorganises the structure of local government by abolishing the Regional Decentralisation Bodies (EDR) and introducing a three-tier system of government: municipalities, provinces and the region. Among other things, the legislation establishes four provinces: Gorizia, Pordenone, Trieste and Udine, with the same territorial boundaries as in the past and with directly elected governing bodies. The law recognises the international and cross-border role of these bodies, which are also called upon to promote equal opportunities – provision is made for the appointment of provincial councillors for equality – and to protect linguistic minorities, including the promotion of Venetian dialects.
