The Italian, world number one and defending champion, having endured a five-set battle in the first round against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic, defeated Portugal’s Nuno Borges, ranked 48th in the world, in three sets, with a score of 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4 in 2 hours and 34 minutes of play on his second match point. With his 95th Grand Slam victory, Sinner has become the Italian with the most wins in the history of men’s singles at major tournaments, definitively overtaking Nicola Pietrangeli.
