Lucca, 4 July (LaPresse) – It was the Aquila contrada, with the horse Diodoro ridden by Giovanni Atzeni, known as Tittia, that won the 2026 Palio di Siena. The historic race took place from 7.30 pm, following yesterday’s postponement due to bad weather. The Aquila contrada had not won for 34 years; its last victory dated back to 3 July 1992, with Andrea Degortes, known as Aceto, riding Galleggiante. For the jockey Azteni, known as Tittia, this is his 12th Palio victory out of 42 races. It is also the second Palio win for the horse Diodoro, out of three contested. During the historical procession, at the behest of Mayor Nicoletta Fabio and the council, the fanfare sounded in tribute to Giovanni Mazzini, who passed away today, who served as the Palazzo’s trumpeter from 1952 to 2018 and was in charge of the Palio fanfare for almost thirty years, and to Mario Cappelli, a lifelong clarinetist who had been on the Carroccio since 1981 and who passed away a few days ago.
