The authorities have urged those celebrating the 250th anniversary of Independence to stay hydrated and take breaks in air-conditioned environments when necessary. The Independence Day parade scheduled for today in Washington has been cancelled due to the high temperatures. Philadelphia also cancelled its ‘Salute to Independence’ parade on Friday. The Great American State Fair in Washington suspended activities in the early afternoon on Friday, before reopening at 5.00 pm. The ‘Capitol Fourth’ concert, a staple of the celebrations in Washington, opened its gates a little later than usual, but eventually went ahead as planned with performances by Patti LaBelle, Trace Adkins and members of the Artemis II space mission, as well as fireworks over Mount Vernon, George Washington’s estate.
