Milan, 5 July (LaPresse) – “We thank the Government for the blow that has been dealt to motorists, who are always regarded as cash cows. The failure to renew the already meagre excise duty discount has caused diesel prices, as predicted, to rise to over 2 euros per litre on motorways and above 1.9 euros on ordinary roads. Petrol prices have also risen above the 1.9 threshold on motorways. A 50-litre full-tank has gone up by around 2 euros in just two days: +2 euros for diesel on local roads, +1.80 on motorways; +1.90 euros for petrol, both on motorways and local roads. And that’s not all, given that these are self-service prices and that, therefore, if a particular petrol station does not also offer a full-service option, many prices will only be updated on Monday morning.” This was stated by Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumers’ Union. “It is strange how the Government, when it suits them, slavishly follows the simple recommendations of the European Commission – which, let us remember, are non-binding and not mandatory, in practice mere advice – whilst failing to comply with its obligations when an anti-inflation procedure is underway, as in the case of seaside resorts, or remaining indifferent to paying fines, from illegal landfill sites to the waste crisis in Campania,” concludes Dona.
