Colombo (Sri Lanka), 6 July (LaPresse/AP) – The death toll from clashes that broke out inside a prison in Negombo, some 35 kilometres north of the capital Colombo, has risen to 25 dead and 100 injured. This was reported by the local TV channel Hiru, which stated that the victims include both prisoners and prison officers. The clashes began on Sunday and have continued today. The causes are not yet known. Sri Lanka’s prisons are severely overcrowded, with over 39,000 prisoners crammed into a system with a total capacity of just 10,000 places.
