Seoul (South Korea), July 9 (LaPresse) – The Supreme Court of South Korea has upheld the seven-year prison sentence of former president Yoon Suk-yeol for violating constitutional procedures in the declaration of martial law in December 2024. The judges found Yoon guilty of excluding the Cabinet from deliberations, falsifying the official decree and using presidential security forces to obstruct his arrest after his removal from office. In addition to appealing the life sentence for rebellion, Yoon has also appealed against a 30-year prison sentence in another case, in which he is accused of ordering drone flights in 2024 with the aim of deliberately increasing tensions with North Korea and thereby creating the conditions to justify the imposition of martial law at home. According to the former president’s lawyers, those drone flights were a response to North Korea’s sending of thousands of waste-filled balloons into South Korean territory.
