Washington (US), 9 July (LaPresse) – Eight men have been charged with murder and conspiracy to commit terrorism for their alleged role in the foiled attack on the UFC combat event organised at the White House last June. The indictment, filed in Ohio, charges all eight individuals with two separate counts of conspiracy: one to provide material support to terrorists and a second to commit murder on federal territory and kill a federal government official. According to the prosecution, the plot began in May, when the group started stockpiling money, firearms, ammunition, bulletproof vests, explosives, drones, medical equipment, communications equipment and other materials. On 10 June, law enforcement became aware of a possible threat against the UFC event organised to mark President Trump’s birthday, four days before the major mixed martial arts show. Last month, the Department of Justice announced federal charges against seven people from various parts of the country, including Ohio, Missouri, Washington, Nebraska and California. The authorities reported that members of the group espoused extremist conspiracy theories and hoped the attack would destabilise the government. One of the defendants told investigators that the plan involved flying drones laden with explosives over the event and then firing on the panicking crowd as they fled.
