Rome, 12 July (LaPresse) – “Mr President, thank you; your presence is a source of comfort for this community and for this region.” These were the words with which the mayor of Andria, Giovanna Bruno, welcomed the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on his arrival in the Apulian town to attend the ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of the train crash that took place on 12 July 2016 between Andria and Corato, in which 23 people lost their lives and a further 51 were injured. “This is precisely the intention”—to express “solidarity and closeness to all the citizens”—were the words spoken by the Head of State in the video released by the Quirinale. Mattarella then greeted the families of the victims, offering them words of comfort, as well as mayors from other municipalities in Puglia present in Andria. Following speeches by Mayor Bruno and Regional President Antonio Decaro, Mattarella made his way to the statue ‘La Comunità’ by the Apulian artist Cosimo Giuliano, which was unveiled today. The President then departed, bid farewell by applause from those present.
