Milan, 13 July (LaPresse) – As has become tradition, the internet is buzzing with coverage of Jannik Sinner’s remarkable achievement: by retaining his Wimbledon title, he has now won five Grand Slam trophies. And amongst the players, the first to congratulate him was Carlos Alcaraz. “Congratulations to Jannik and the team. Enjoy the moment,” the Spaniard wrote on social media. Alcaraz, who was defeated by the Italian in last year’s final, missed this year’s Wimbledon due to injury and is expected to return for the US Open. Many Italian players celebrated Sinner, of course, from Jasmin Paolini – “nothing but applause” – to Elisabetta Cocciaretto, from Luciano Darderi to Fed Cup captain Tathiana Garbin, who wrote: “Historic – I’m proud of you, Jannik”. Congratulations also came from the official Wimbledon accounts (“Sinner becomes the tenth man to defend his title in the Open era”), the ATP and the Italian Tennis Federation. There was also an interesting post from Formula 1 – of which Sinner is an ambassador and a fan – celebrating Italy “which has scored a one-two in Britain”, recalling “last week’s” Ferrari victory at Silverstone and Sinner’s win at Wimbledon yesterday.
