Frankfurt (Germany), 18 July (LaPresse) – The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, has stated that he is considering calling for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit the city in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly. In an interview with the New York Times, Mamdani described Netanyahu as “a war criminal”, referring to the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes in Gaza. “I believe Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague,” said the mayor, adding that he is still consulting with the city’s legal department to clarify whether he has the authority to order the New York Police Department to arrest a foreign head of government. “We will do everything the law allows us to do in New York, but we will not write new laws to achieve this,” he clarified. According to the New York Times, Mamdani had already promised during the election campaign that he would order Netanyahu’s arrest should he visit the city. The Israeli Prime Minister dismissed the threat, accusing the mayor of supporting Hamas and stating that he was not concerned by his remarks.
