Rome, 20 July (LaPresse) – “I am grateful to the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, and to Pope Leo XIV for the support they have offered to Ukraine.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote this on Telegram after receiving Archbishop Gallagher in Kyiv. “The Holy See’s delegation was in Kyiv at the very moment of the massive Russian attack against our people. Russia has no intention of halting these attacks, but this is precisely why it is even more important to continue working for peace. One of the formats that could help achieve this goal is a meeting between leaders. I thank the Vatican for its willingness to host such a meeting and for its constant efforts to make it possible,” said Zelensky. “We discussed the Church’s activities in Ukraine. We greatly appreciate the work of our clergy, who support both our soldiers and civilians, helping people to persevere during this difficult time. We also spoke about Ukraine’s path towards the European Union,” he added. “It is important that the Vatican supports our European choice and recognises that Ukraine is doing everything necessary to become a full member of the EU. I would like to thank His Holiness and the Vatican for their constant prayers and for their support for Ukraine and our people,” he concluded.
