Milan, 20 July (LaPresse) – Former British Defence Secretary John Healey has been appointed by the new British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, i.e. Minister of Finance. Healey had resigned from the government last month in protest against the underfunding of the defence investment plan by Keir Starmer’s government. The MP has considerable experience at the Treasury, having served for five years as Economic and Financial Secretary to the Treasury under Gordon Brown. He also served as Minister for Local Government from 2007 to 2009 and as Minister for Housing from 2009 to 2010. Ed Miliband, meanwhile, has been appointed Foreign Secretary by the new British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham. The former Energy Secretary was initially considered the favourite for the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer, but has instead been entrusted with leading the Foreign Office. In addition to his appointment, it has been announced that former Defence Secretary John Healey has been chosen as the new Chancellor of the Exchequer. Furthermore, Shabana Mahmood, who joined Downing Street alongside Miliband, will remain Home Secretary. And Louise Haigh, who had resigned in 2024, will return to the Cabinet as Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
