The patient, who was initially admitted in critical condition to the Intensive Care Unit at the Ospedale Maggiore of the Bologna Local Health Authority, had been transferred in recent weeks to the Intensive Care Unit at the Ospedale Civile di Baggiovara, part of the Modena University Hospital System, where she passed away this morning. Her condition—as explained by hospital officials—had immediately appeared to be extremely serious, and despite attempts at every possible medical and surgical intervention, she never regained consciousness, until her condition deteriorated beyond recovery. The family, in accordance with the woman’s previously expressed wishes, consented to organ donation. “The administrations, doctors, and nursing staff of the University Hospital System, the Modena Local Health Authority, and the Bologna Local Health Authority wish to express their deepest condolences to the patient’s family,” the statement concludes.
