Milan, 23 July (LaPresse/AP) – The agreement between the US and Saudi Arabia on a civil nuclear programme requires the kingdom to normalise relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords. This is according to US President Donald Trump in a post on his social media platform, Truth. “The civil nuclear agreement (there will be no enrichment of material!) currently being finalised between the US Department of Energy and Saudi Arabia, which concerns exclusively non-military uses such as those already in place in Iran and the United Arab Emirates (and other countries), will be approved, but is entirely contingent upon Saudi Arabia’s adherence to the highly respected and highly successful Abraham Accords,” wrote Trump, adding that “the United States is not opposed to civil nuclear facilities (not intended for enrichment)”. Trump is seeking to build on the 2020 agreements, which expanded the number of Arab states with diplomatic relations with Israel. Non-proliferation experts have expressed concern that the agreement does not include safeguards designed to prevent the enrichment of uranium to levels usable for military purposes. The agreement is expected to last for 30 years and involve US companies in the development of the programme. It could allow for the construction of a uranium enrichment plant in Saudi Arabia following a joint study between the United States and Saudi Arabia. The agreement is expected to be submitted to Congress for review.
