(LaPresse) – British millionaires, including former footballer Gary Lineker and music producer Brian Eno, have written to new Prime Minister Andy Burnham calling for more tax. “We can afford it,” reads the open letter signed by 120 wealthy Britons and promoted by the organisation Patriotic Millionaires UK. “We’re not talking about higher taxes for those who get up and go to work every day to earn a living, but for the wealthiest, whose income comes from the wealth they own,” he explains. Millionaires support a 2% wealth tax of more than £10 million. Signatories to the appeal include Notting Hill director Richard Curtis, Ian Gregg, former CEO of Greggs and son of the bakery chain’s founder, Scottish crime writer Val McDermid, and Gary Stevenson, a former financial trader and now LGBTQ+ rights activist.
