Milan, 25 July (LaPresse) – “In recent hours, the Palermo Public Prosecutor, Maurizio De Lucia, has sounded the alarm over the state of prisons and the role of the Mafia within correctional facilities. This is an important warning that deserves to be heeded. Yet, regarding the crisis in prisons – both in terms of the intolerable overcrowding that robs prisoners of their dignity and forces prison officers to work in unsustainable conditions, and in terms of security issues – there have been no adequate responses from the government in recent years. Nor are there any concrete measures on the horizon to resolve this dramatic crisis.” So reads a statement from the Central Executive Committee of the National Magistrates’ Association. “Faced with the warning from a prosecutor at the forefront of the fight against the Mafia, the Justice Minister’s reaction leaves one dumbfounded: no substantive response, but only a disjointed and unacceptable attack. The Ministry’s role is to resolve the problems of the prison system, not to vehemently attack those who fight crime. We stand alongside Prosecutor De Lucia, the prison police staff who carry out an extremely delicate role with great professionalism, and the probation magistrates who must manage enormously complex situations with systematically inadequate resources. Immediate responses and action are needed regarding prisons,” the statement concludes.
