Milan, 26 July (LaPresse) – “Those tasked with tackling the complex issue of security often find themselves doing so in difficult, unpredictable and highly tense circumstances, which require not only the essential ability to use force but also, and above all, the ability to exercise control over it. We stand in full solidarity with the police, and it is very much in their own interest to assess the facts and ascertain whether any errors were made or if anyone is to blame.” So said the Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI), Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, in a lengthy interview with *l’Avvenire* regarding the death of Abderrahim Fakir, who died on 19 July following a police operation in Bologna. “With regard to the events in Bologna, I appreciated Minister Matteo Piantedosi’s commitment: ‘This will not be another Cucchi case,’ he said. A commitment to truth and justice, to reaffirming trust in the institutions – an antidote to anger and ‘do-it-yourself’ revenge. This is, moreover, what Fakir’s niece has courageously called for. Seeking justice, of course, does not mean a conviction – the presumption of innocence applies to everyone until proven otherwise – but rather an establishment of the facts and a fair assessment of responsibility. And this process requires time and careful examination,” added Zuppi.
