Kumamoto (Japan), 30 July (LaPresse/AP) – The powerful earthquake which, earlier this week, caused an explosion in a shopping centre in Kumamoto, brought down a factory chimney and levelled homes in south-west Japan, has claimed the lives of at least 23 people. This was announced on Thursday by the Kumamoto Prefectural Government. Rescue workers continued their operations in the Kumamoto area, on the island of Kyushu (the main island of southern Japan), which was struck on Tuesday by the 7.1-magnitude earthquake. The total number of people missing was unclear. The earthquake left at least 63 people injured, five of them seriously, according to the prefectural government.
