Turin, 30 July (LaPresse) – NATO is “in close contact with the Polish authorities regarding the violation of Polish airspace”. This was stated in a statement by Martin O’Donnell, spokesperson for the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), following the violation of Polish airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine. The Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Alexus G. Grynkewich, has announced that he spoke today with the Polish Chief of the Defence Staff, General Wieslaw Kukula, regarding NATO’s and Poland’s response to the incident, which is still under investigation. The Supreme Allied Commander Europe emphasised that NATO will continue to take all necessary measures to defend its territory. “In response to a Russian missile of a currently unknown type that entered Polish airspace and subsequently crashed on Polish territory – one of many missiles launched by Russia against Ukraine during the night – NATO and Poland activated their air and ground defences,” he said, explaining that two NATO fighter jets, Polish F-16s, a NATO Airbus A330 multi-role tanker aircraft, a Polish Saab 340 airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft and a Polish Mi-24 helicopter.
