Milan, July 31 (LaPresse) – “Ferragosto will mark the peak of Italy’s summer tourism season. Between August 1 and August 23, around 17.4 million tourists are expected to travel across the country, including 8.4 million Italians and 9 million international visitors, generating a total of more than 78 million overnight stays.”
These are the estimates released by CNA Turismo e Commercio, according to which the average stay will be around 4.5 nights, while direct tourism spending will exceed €9 billion. Taking into account the effects on accommodation, restaurants, retail, crafts, culture and services, the overall economic impact could surpass €15 billion, the report notes.
“The first departures are expected as early as July 31 and August 1, but the main holiday exodus will gather pace from Monday, August 3, continuing until August 23, when the first significant return journeys will begin. Ferragosto once again confirms its role as the heart of the Italian summer, concentrating the year’s highest volume of travel, consumer spending and tourism experiences,” the study continues.
Seaside destinations remain the top choice, followed by cities and historic towns, mountain resorts, lakes and spa destinations. Demand is also growing for experiential holidays, active tourism and outdoor stays, with increasing interest in walking trails, cycling tourism, hiking, natural parks, concerts, festivals, local fairs and performances held at archaeological sites.
The appeal of Italy’s outstanding food and wine traditions, artistic craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage is becoming an increasingly decisive factor in destination choice. These elements transform travel into an experience closely linked to the identity of local communities while strengthening the connection between tourism and the Made in Italy brand, CNA Turismo e Commercio explains.
