Madrid (Spain), 3 August (LaPresse) – The influx of tens of thousands of migrants into Ceuta was not anticipated by the Moroccan authorities; however, not only did they fail to stem the flow of people heading for Tarajal, but they also facilitated their passage and exploited the international repercussions of the incident for political gain. According to El País, this is the conclusion reached by the Spanish secret services after analysing the crisis that took Pedro Sánchez’s government by surprise. Whilst initial speculation focused on the reasons that might have prompted Morocco to take this hostile measure against Spain – such as Sánchez’s recent visit to Algeria, the granting of citizenship to the Sahrawi people, or the rivalry to host the 2030 World Cup final – the conclusion reached by the intelligence services is that there were no specific motives. It was not a premeditated decision, but rather an act of opportunism that spiralled out of control for its own instigators.
