(LaPresse) – “The temporary reintroduction of internal border controls is a measure that European countries have implemented hundreds of times over the years: Spain itself has resorted to it on several occasions, just as some neighbouring countries have done in relation to us. The outcry surrounding our government’s decision is therefore entirely unwarranted. This is a practical provision, provided for in the treaties themselves, which has no impact on European citizens or on those from non-EU countries who already hold a valid residence permit.” This was stated by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi in an interview with ‘La Verità’. “Despite recent controversial statements, we must nevertheless express our full solidarity with Spain, which is facing a complex situation. Italy has already stated that it is ready to offer its support,” he said. “But we cannot view these events with detachment, because every person who lands irregularly is, in fact, entering the European area, and therefore the issue concerns all Member States.” The hope is that there will be “clarity on the circumstances, not least to understand whether there was an organised operation behind the mass influx. What is certain is that a more permissive approach to tackling migration ends up fuelling the illusion, amongst those who have no right to do so, that they can remain in Europe”.
