Turin, Aug. 4 (LaPresse) – The extraordinary videoconference meeting of EU interior ministers following the migrant crisis that erupted in Ceuta “provided member states with an opportunity to discuss the importance of protecting the EU’s external borders.” There was “a shared understanding of the need to continue fighting migrant smuggling networks relentlessly, to strengthen repatriations, to consolidate the EU’s borders, to build solid partnerships with third countries, and to improve forecasting capabilities,” according to a statement. The ministers “emphasized the need to improve shared situational awareness, a goal that could be achieved by further developing early-warning systems, such as pre-border intelligence and social media monitoring.”
