Washington (USA), Aug. 5 (LaPresse) – The United States, Iran and Oman are close to reaching an interim agreement on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Axios reports this, citing two regional sources and a U.S. official, adding that Washington aims to announce the deal today. The agreement, which has been under negotiation for several weeks, seeks to restore the ceasefire between the U.S. and Tehran and restart negotiations on a nuclear agreement. The deal being finalized would meet some of Iran’s demands for greater control over traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, control it did not have before the war. According to two regional sources, the agreement under discussion provides for a temporary 60-day arrangement between Oman and Tehran in the Strait of Hormuz, which could be extended. All inbound maritime traffic through the strait and into the Persian Gulf would pass through a northern route, crossing Iranian waters. All outbound traffic through the strait and toward the Arabian Sea would pass through a southern route, crossing Oman’s territorial waters, in coordination with Iran. During the 60-day period, no tolls or fees will be charged. The parties, Axios further reports, will commit to clearing the central shipping lane of naval mines within 30 days. Once the central lane has been cleared, it would be used for both inbound and outbound traffic, under the terms of a permanent agreement to be negotiated between Oman and Iran.
