Madrid (Spain), Aug. 8 (LaPresse) – At Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat airports, “the day is proceeding normally and without any particular inconvenience for passengers.” Sources from the Spanish Interior Ministry told LaPresse this, after enhanced checks for travellers arriving from Italy came into force at midnight. The sources stress that these checks “have only been reinstated at ports and airports” and that “the measure does not apply to land border crossings with France or Portugal.” The ministry also said that “the necessary reinforcement of police personnel” has been arranged to carry out the checks. A spokesperson for the Spanish National Police told LaPresse that “at the moment, during the morning, there have been no significant incidents in the checks applied to travellers from Italy at the Madrid and Barcelona airports.” The way in which the checks are carried out, she said, differs from one airport to another. At Barajas, the checks are carried out on the runway, while at El Prat they are conducted inside the facilities where border checks are located, the spokesperson explained, saying that police officers direct passengers where they need to go, thus preventing confusion from arising.
