Turin, 9 Aug. (LaPresse) – “Another icon of our sporting world has left us. None of us will ever forget his victory in Rome in 1960. Berruti was an unrivalled champion, whose achievements will go down in the history of our sport: he made Italy dream and, with his gold medal at the Rome Games, made us proud of our Italian identity.” So said CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio, commenting on the death, at the age of 87, of Livio Berruti. Upon hearing the news, the head of CONI “ordered flags to be flown at half-mast at the CONI headquarters at the Foro Italico, declared a period of mourning for the sporting world and invited the National Sports Federations, Associated Sports Disciplines and Sports Promotion Bodies to honour his memory with a minute’s silence at competitions over the coming days”, according to a statement.
