Montreal (Canada), Aug. 10 (LaPresse) – Defending champion Ben Shelton ended 19-year-old Joao Fonseca’s run at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, the Masters 1000 being held in Montreal this year. The American defeated the young Brazilian 6-3 7-6(3), thus recording his second win in as many head-to-head meetings. The only Top 10 player remaining in the draw, Shelton has reached the quarterfinals and kept alive his ambitions of winning his fourth title of the season, following his triumphs in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart. For a place in the semifinals, he will face Jakub Mensik in a match that will pit the only two players still in contention with a Masters 1000 title to their name against each other. The Czech, who won in Miami in 2025 by beating Novak Djokovic in the final, defeated Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4 7-5, after the latter had surprisingly eliminated fourth seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
