If I hadn’t been absolutely certain — and the test in Monte Carlo proved it — I would never have stepped onto the track, knowing full well the risk of a probable relapse.” So said long jumper Mattia Furlani in a lengthy post on his social media accounts just a few hours after sustaining a hamstring injury that forced him to withdraw after his first qualifying jump at the European Championships in Paris. “I felt fine today; I was building up speed strongly, but clearly my body, at certain intensities, wasn’t yet ready to return to the speeds I was used to, and I suffered a relapse. Over the last few months, I’ve probably gone through the worst times of my career so far: I’m experiencing a lack of confidence in myself and my abilities, which has only been growing lately, and I’m finding the path ahead a bit blurred. My season ends here,” he added.
