(LaPresse/AP) – US President Donald Trump has extended by 90 days the exemption allowing foreign vessels to transport goods, including oil, fertilisers and other fossil fuel-derived products, between US ports. The President had first granted the exemption from the Jones Act on 17 March, thereby easing pressure on prices following the outbreak of the war with Iran. The latest extension will come into force on 17 August. Unlike previous extensions, the Pentagon will consult with the Maritime Administration to decide which voyages are exempt from the 1920 legislation containing the Jones Act. The new exemption will apply exclusively to energy-related goods and agricultural raw materials, such as fertilisers and soya oil.
