Damascus (Syria), Aug. 11 (LaPresse) – In Syria, former president Bashar al-Assad’s younger brother Maher has also been sentenced to death in absentia for crimes against humanity and war crimes. Assad and Maher fled to Russia after insurgents stormed Damascus. In the same trial, Atef Najib, Assad’s maternal cousin, was also sentenced to death for leading the repression in the southern province of Daraa that led to the uprising and, subsequently, the civil war. Najib was arrested and became one of the highest-ranking officials to stand trial. He was inside a cage, dressed in a prisoner’s uniform, while the judge read out the sentence amid tight security. Najib is a former brigadier general in the Syrian army who, in 2011, under the Assad regime, headed the Political Security Department in the province of Daraa, in southern Syria.
