Rome, Aug. 11 (LaPresse) – “Put the referee back at the center of the match and use VAR as exceptional support, limiting its intervention to cases of clear and obvious error”: This is what Daniele Orsato, the new head of the Serie A and B Referees Commission, said to Sky Sport at the referees’ training camp in Cascia. It all starts with this summer’s World Cup: “We saw how the central figure was the referee. And we want it to remain that way, with the referee making the decisions and VAR intervening when it needs to. UEFA and FIFA have reiterated the concept of clear and obvious error.” According to Orsato, this is not a revolution, “I wouldn’t say we have any news, we don’t need to make any proclamations. You have certainly read the new regulatory changes: we saw them at the World Cup and we will apply them. They are IFAB guidelines, FIFA implemented them at the World Cup, UEFA will implement them in its competitions and in Italy we will apply them too,” he added. “We have worked a lot on understanding the dynamics of the game – Orsato also explained -, referees always study the rules, but this week we have worked to understand the dynamics and to have the confidence and credibility of the players and coaches on the pitch. VAR is exceptional support, but it will come into play when it needs to, in the event of a clear and obvious error.”
