Turin, 11 Aug. (LaPresse) – Sara Curtis has won bronze in the 100-metre freestyle at the European Swimming Championships currently taking place in Paris. This is a historic medal for Italy: no Italian swimmer before her had ever made it onto the podium at a European Championship in the 100-metre freestyle. The gold went to the Dutch swimmer Marrit Steenbergen in 51.90 seconds, ahead of her compatriot Milou Van Wick (52.71), who finished just one hundredth of a second ahead of Curtis (52.72). “I’m out of breath; I’m really happy because winning this medal is incredibly important for me and for my development. For me, it’s a redemption; I’ve written an important chapter for myself and for the history of Italian swimming. I’m happy; I’m exhausted but absolutely delighted.” So said Sara Curtis after winning bronze in the 100-metre freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Paris. “I probably struggled a bit on the first lap, even though it was a tenth of a second slower, but I didn’t want to go any slower than that, so I’m happy,” she added. “Perhaps I was hoping to do slightly better at the end – I missed out on silver by a hundredth of a second – but that’s fine. This spurs me on to work harder on my finishes.”
