We were annoyed by the phrase we heard so often: ‘nobody knows when, how or why VAR intervenes’. Now nobody can say that anymore because we’ve carried out an eight-year study across our UEFA competitions, and within this system – or platform, call it what you will – everything is there. It covers all the situations where VAR must intervene, as well as those where it must not intervene, or where it must overturn a decision made on the pitch.” So said Roberto Rosetti, UEFA’s head of refereeing, to Sky Sport regarding the new rule changes that will be applied in European competitions from this season onwards. “This is an excellent tool. It’s not just a tool for VAR; it’s a tool for refereeing and for football itself. What we want is a strong referee who makes decisions on the pitch, and VAR is an excellent safety net. I wish I’d had it in certain situations – unfortunately, it wasn’t around in my day. However, it’s certainly a tool to be taken very seriously, but one that must be used in the best possible way,” he added.
