(LaPresse) – “Our vision is not limited to these three countries; rather, we aspire to see it grow, and perhaps one day the right conditions will be in place for all the countries in the region to come together under its umbrella, which would be the best way to achieve lasting stability throughout the region.” This was stated by the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in an interview with the newspaper Asharq Al-Awsa, commenting on the ‘Mecca Pact’ between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Erdogan’s remarks come on the eve of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s visit to Egypt, during which he has already expressed the hope that Cairo too will join the agreement. Ankara, Erdogan went on to say, “has always preferred diplomatic solutions to escalation, dialogue to conflict, and greater cooperation in the region to divisions. We know very well,” the Turkish president added, “that solutions imported from abroad lead only to disaster. The region’s problems should be resolved by the region’s own actors,” he concluded.
