Rome, 12 August (LaPresse) – At the European Swimming Championships, Italy won silver in the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay. The Italian quartet, comprising Emma Virginia Menicucci, Sara Curtis, Chiara Tarantino and Alessandra Mao, set a new Italian record with a time of 3’33‘19, finishing second only to the Netherlands (Milou van Wijk, Imani de Jong, Yara van Kalmthout, Marrit Steenbergen), who clocked 3’31’89. Menicucci put in a fantastic opening leg, then Curtis, flying out of the blocks in the second leg, made the difference by taking Italy into the lead; Tarantino was superb in the third leg in holding the position; and the very young Mao, at just 15 years old, was magnificent, like a seasoned veteran, as she stepped onto the European podium. Bronze went to the Neutral Athletes B in 3’33”69.
