Rome, 16 Aug. (LaPresse) – Simona Quadarella has won the gold medal in the 400m freestyle at the European Swimming Championships. The Italian, who had already won gold in the 800m and 1,500m, completed a hat-trick with an extraordinary finish and a superb performance, clocking 4:01.34 to finish ahead of Germany’s Isabel Gose (4:02.41) and Maya Werner (4:03.73), securing a clear victory against top-class opponents. In the penultimate length, she caught up with and overtook Werner, and then in the final length she pulled clear of Gose, who had been leading up to that point. Italy is currently back at the top of the medal table: level with Great Britain on the number of golds (13), but with nine more silver medals (13 to 4).
